The purpose of this paper is to summarize the latest thinking in portal placement for knee arthroscopy. Proper portal placement is essential to successful knee arthroscopy, as it defines the surgeon’s access to the joint. Numerous approaches have been described in the literature, from the so-called “universal” anterolateral portal to a posterior trans-septal portal.

The arthroscope has dramatically changed the orthopaedic surgeon's approach to the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of joint ailments. A high degree of clinical accuracy, combined with low morbidity, has encouraged the use of arthroscopy to assist in diagnosis, to determine prognosis, and often to provide treatment.
